I read it in an evening and couldn't put it down. It was a very engaging book and yet, here I sit tonight having read an entire book with Mr. Darcy front and center and I can't help but think that this book was good - but it could have been so much more.

Just as with the first Enid Wilson novel I read (and totally enjoyed), Bargain With The Devil, this book feels like it was only slightly more than a rough draft. It would be so much more of a story if it were fleshed out a bit more. I am sitting here, moments after having read this really great book totally wanting more of it. It was over too soon. There wasn't enough of it. It was sweet and fun to devour, but it was like the totally yummy candy bar that you sneak in the afternoon - it is SO good and you enjoy it but after the sugar high is over, you are left feeling a bit flat.

The basic storyline of Really Angelic is that Elizabeth Bennet is, unbeknownst to her, an Angel - and more specifically, she is Fitzwilliam Darcy's guardian angel. Such a sweet and lighthearted paranormal twist on the Pride and Prejudice storyline. I loved the premise of the book. Having said that, I think it is only fair to say the Ms. Wilson's web address is www.steamydarcy.com - which says a lot. Jane Austen purists will not like this book - and it is for a mature audience as there are numerous, highly sensual scenes from start to finish in this very short book. A very delicious and quite naughty version of Elizabeth and Darcy!

So, here is what I have to say about this book and to Ms. Wilson: As a reader, I look forward to what you write next. You are a very talented writer and you have a gift for storytelling. My only wish is that you would give me more - more details! For example, I would love to have read more about the scheming Miss Bingley, more about the wicked Mr. Wickham, more about the wedding...just more. You have me totally hooked as a fan. I will buy your next book without question and I hope to find a more fleshed out, detailed story with the covers.

Speaking of the cover - it rocks. The cover for Bargain With the Devil was one of the reasons I read that book and the cover for this book is fantastic! More of that too please!

Jen's rating: 7.5 of 10 stars: In my opinion, I think this book needs more detail - bit of fleshing out - and I ain't talking about the love scenes. Those are just fine. This is a very sensual, sexy and steamy Darcy and a very sassy and willing Elizabeth. Keep this one on your bookshelf for inspiration, but hide it from the kids and your Mother In Law!

Updating...

Now that I am up and running again, my first order of business will be to add in my reviews of the books I have read, but not blogged about.

Will get right to that and then start reviewing the books that are literally piled up at the foot of my desk. So far, I am liking it very much.

If you would like to give this book a try, I found THIS SITE where you can read a Chapter One excerpt from this novel.

I have recently been friended by Ms. Altman on Facebook and am sad to report that Sourcebooks, a leading publisher of Austen-related books, has dropped the rest of Ms. Altman's series. I am sad to hear that and can only say that it is a shame that quality work like Ms. Altman's is wholly under appreciated. So many Austen-related books are not all that good....it is sad to see a quality series dropped. You can contact Sourcebooks HERE to let them know how much you have enjoyed this book and wish they would reconsider. I have been very fortunate to have been passed Sharon Lathan's series in AR copy by Sourcebooks and they have been nothing but kind, generous and pleasant. Reader feedback does count so if you are so inclined, have your say!

You can learn more about author Marsha Altman and her books HERE.

More updates as I get further into the book!

My Dearest Mr. Darcy: An Amazing Journey into Love Everlasting

Another highly romantic and delightfully easy to read offering from Sharon Lathan. Once again, we are invited into the lives of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and his lovely wife, Elizabeth and what a dreamy and loving journey it is...

The love birds are off on some adventures together (which are not only enjoyable reading, but full of historical tidbits. You will learn something about this era in History)and are also looking forward to the arrival of their first born child. Also present, as in the previous novels, are the supremely handled cast of supporting characters that Mrs. Lathan has given us to enjoy almost as much as Darcy and Lizzy. From family members to newly introduced friends, we get to visit with all of them. I remain an ardent fan of Dr. Darcy as I think he is a wonderfully imagined and unusual character. Dr. Darcy is a much needed anchor and family link in the life of Fitzwilliam Darcy. The scenes between the two men are touching and will make you fall for both characters even more.

Among the most touching and vivid scenes in book are the birthing scenes and arrival of the Darcy baby. Mrs. Lathan draws on her real life knowledge both as a Mother and as a RN who works with newborn babies to bring us right there with Lizzy. If you have had a baby, you can relate and if you haven't had a baby, you will have a very good idea of what giving birth is like. A word of caution though....your partner likely has *no hope* of living up to the example that Darcy sets as an impending father. He's amazing. The birthing scenes and the scenes directly after are some of the most endearing and well written of any book I have read in this genre. Expertly executed and unforgettable!

Through it all, the characters remain true to their core personalities. Darcy still reverts to being stern and ill humored at times. Elizabeth is still lively, impertinent and manages to bring out the best in Darcy when he needs it most. At the center of this story are an iconic couple who have captured the hearts of readers for decades. Their story continues with the Darcy Saga in a very romantic, sweet and uplifting fashion. You just cannot help but love these characters as they are written by this author. Sharon Lathan has a true vision for the Darcys in a happy and highly amorous marriage that she never deviates from. It is a nice diversion from some of the unhappy and delusional places we sometimes find this couple in other renderings of their story.

Well researched, lovingly crafted and beautifully written! Happy reading Darcy fans!!

Sharon Lathan's website: The Darcy Saga

With many thanks to In addition to what is always there, I am guest blogging and interviewing at numerous places, talking about my book. I, as you all probably know, am the author of The Darcy Saga - a sequel to Pride &Prejudice. My second novel in the series will be officially released in 3 DAYS!!

Loving Mr. Darcy: Journeys Beyond Pemberley continues on where the first novel – Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy: Two Shall Become One – ended. And, in just 4 months the third book in the series will be out. What a year this has been! My head is spinning and I can’t quite wrap my mind around the fact that I am now a multi-published author. Surreal.

I am very excited about this book and where I have taken the Darcys. It is a larger novel than the first, both in page number and content. The Darcys travel all over England, socialize with dozens of friends, deal with trials, and explore historical places, all while growing deeper in their love and anticipating the birth of their first child.

Look for both novels at major bookstores and online sellers. It will be in Target (along with my first novel that is still there) in October. Naturally you can click over to my website to learn more of the specifics, read excerpts and reviews, find links to purchasing places, and mark the dates for my virtual book tour stops: The Darcy Saga

I also want to invite everyone to participate in my Loving Mr. Darcy Launch Fete! For 3 fun-filled days I will be hosting group discussions, posting quizzes, and sharing excerpts. Check the posted dates at my site and follow me around.

Whew! So much happening! As I said, I am very proud of Loving Mr. Darcy. The reviews are gradually flowing in, but here are snippets of a few:

“In true Jane Austen style, this story is filled with period details and witty dialogue. The Regency comes alive again in LOVING MR. DARCY. Lizzy's birthday celebration, picnic festivities and endless vivid images of the time, bring enough elements of the setting to mind that when these characters speak, the reader can see and hear them. Georgiana, the Bingleys, and Elizabeth's sisters, as well as countless other familiar faces, appear again on these pages. They are true to character and act as an Austen fan would hope they would—or expect them to. All in all, LOVING MR. DARCY is a very pleasant read! Well done!” Romance Reader at Heart – a 4 rose read

“A refreshing and romantic continuation of a beloved novel! Mrs. Lathan not only tells us a story, she also educates us on a myriad of Regency era rituals, gadgets, and habits. It gives the reader a sort of a snapshot of Regency life and lends a very rich and color filled backdrop for the continuing story of Darcy and Elizabeth. Another fun, frolicking and romantic romp through Regency England with the delicious Mr. Darcy and his lovely and lively wife Elizabeth. A lovely peek inside a sweet, sensual (and hot!) marriage between two people who burn for one another and inspire one another.” Awaiting Diana

“If there is one thing that Sharon Lathan has written perfectly it the detailed descriptions of regency life. It is all described so beautifully, and adds a real depth to this love story. I must say there is a lot to love in this regency romance. Loving Mr. Darcy gives readers a look inside the marriage of Darcy and Lizzy. The hot, steamy love affair between two very passionate people. The attention to details will leave readers with a firm memory of Sharon Lathan’s talented writing, the characters -new and old- will leave you wanting more, and the everlasting love between Darcy and Lizzy will leave more than one reader swooning. For the fans of Jane Austen and the regency romances, Loving Mr. Darcy is well recommended.” A Bibliophile’s Bookshelf

“This is one of the most romantic take off on Pride and Prejudice that I have read. There are many takes on Lizzie and Darcy: some authors put them at odds with each other, or they’re made into amateur sleuths, or even power hungry and doormat couple, etc. While each one is enjoyable to read for its variations, Sharon Lathan’s take on the couple is my all-time favorite. It’s how I imagine Fitzwilliam Darcy to be with his shyness coming off as arrogant. He’s sweet and loving, sexy and insatiable, strong and kind. He’s everything that a dream man should be. Lizzy is wonderful in this story also. She hasn’t lost her witticisms. I was afraid that the book would be overly sweet, but Ms. Lathan did a superlative job of making this couple very much in-love without making the book ridiculous. Sometimes, I can’t help but squeal in delight at the antics of this Mr. and Mrs. Darcy. I love it. I bet you’re going to love it, too. It’s a Pride and Prejudice version that cannot be missed.” This Book For Free

"This story also includes more of the Bingley's which I loved, especially some of the realizations Carolyn Bingley comes to, that was wickedly enjoyable. But the Darcy's also encourage the Bingley's in a way that enhances their own marriage. You'll enjoy appearances from many of the characters you loved (and loved to hate) from the original novel. This story touches a part of me, deep down in my soul, it captures the essence of romantic and eternal love and I think anyone who reads it will feel richly blessed by the story. People need to feel good, if you need a little romance or need some hope that true love it out there, then read this series. If you are like me and love Pride and Prejudice sequels then this series should be on the top of your list - trust me!” 5 Crowns at Royal Reviews

Thanks again to Jen and Karollyn, who have been so amazingly supportive of me all these years. And I do hope all of you will join in the fun!

Mr. Darcy - Vampyre

Right out of the gate, I want to again proclaim my 'non-affection' for vampire stories. I know vampires are the new pirates, but I am just not that into them. I could never, ever read a book with full vampire gore in it. It just won't do for me.

So, when I saw this book was going to be released, I sighed. I couldn't possibly imagine what the author could do to make this an enjoyable book if she was going to turn Darcy into a blood sucking vampire. I am pleased to report that I was wrong. Amanda Grange has done a very good job of turning Darcy into a vampire - and she retained the essence of Mr. Darcy while doing it. Good on ya, Ms. Grange!

This book begins on Elizabeth Bennet's wedding day. Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy are married in a double ceremony and at the very last second, Mr. Darcy changes his mind about their honeymoon. Instead of heading to the Lake District as planned, they board a ship bound for France and Darcy starts acting very odd - including not coming to Elizabeth on their wedding night.

I won't go into the details further as I don't want to spoil the story for any of you. I have a couple of little gripes about this book though. First of all, Darcy can apparently turn himself into a bat - which, to me, is a bit cheesy. Okay, so it's totally different from some other very prominent literary vampires, but still.... Darcy also sparkles in the sunlight. Not sure what to make of that other than I find the prospect of a sparkling and shimmering Darcy quite sexy and have no idea why. Must be those 'other vampires' in my head, eh?

My other gripe is that it is a shame the publishers and/or author chose to put the word 'vampyre' in the title of this book. It would have been so much better to keep the reader wondering what the heck Darcy was hiding. I realize it likely has to do with marketing, but still...a bit of a let down. Even though I knew what the big secret was, the character of Elizabeth had no idea throughout the whole novel and that kept me turning the page.

From Amazon:

Amanda Grange, bestselling author of Mr. Darcy's Diary, gives us something completely new—a delightfully thrilling, paranormal Pride and Prejudice sequel, full of danger, darkness and deep romantic love…

Amanda Grange's style and wit bring readers back to Jane Austen's timeless storytelling, but always from a very unique and unusual perspective, and now Grange is back with an exciting and completely new take on Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

Mr. Darcy, Vampyre starts where Pride and Prejudice ends and introduces a dark family curse so perfectly that the result is a delightfully thrilling, spine-chilling, breathtaking read. A dark, poignant and visionary continuation of Austen's beloved story, this tale is full of danger, darkness and immortal love.

Jen's rating: 8 of 10 stars....I wish the title hadn't given away the plot and I wish that things were ramped up a bit in the romance department - however, this is a very well written book with a lot of dark (but not too dark) suspense that is a VERY enjoyable read. Once again, we get to have a peek into the marriage of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and his bride, Elizabeth.

One of the strengths of these books is the very deep and emotional bond that Darcy and Elizabeth share. That never changes in these books. There is never any doubt and there *still* aren't any weird plot twists, time travel, illicit affairs etc. that we sometimes get in other Pride and Prejudice 'spin offs'. A refreshing and romantic continuation of a beloved novel!

Another strength of this particular author's continuation is the careful and tireless historical detail contained in this series. Mrs. Lathan not only tells us a story, she also educates us on a myriad of Regency era rituals, gadgets, and habits. It gives the reader a sort of a snapshot of Regency life and lends a very rich and color filled backdrop for the continuing story of Darcy and Elizabeth.

The very best part of Loving Mr. Darcy, for me, was the introduction of several very colorful and highly entertaining secondary characters - none of which are a love interest for Darcy (imagine that!). My very favorite is Dr. George Darcy who is an eccentric and highly irregular member of the Darcy family. I instantly fell for Dr. Darcy and his humor, wit and verve.

From Amazon and Romance Reader At Heart:

Beyond Pride and Prejudice…Beyond 'I Do'…

Darcy and Lizzy venture away from Pemberley to journey through England, finding friends, relatives, fun, love, and an even deeper and more sacred bond along the way.

Having embarked on the greatest adventure of all, marriage and the start of a new life together, now the Darcys take the reader on a journey through a time of prosperity, enjoyment, and security. They experience all the adventures of travel, with friends and relatives providing both companionship and complications, and with fun as their focus.

The sights and sounds, tastes and flavors of Regency England come alive. Through it all, Darcy and Lizzy continue to build a marriage filled with romance, sensuality, and the beauty of a deep, abiding love.

Jen's rating: 9 of 10 stars: Another fun, frolicking and romantic romp through Regency England with the delicious Mr. Darcy and his lovely and lively wife Elizabeth. A lovely peek inside a sweet, sensual (and hot!) marriage between two people who burn for one another and inspire one another.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith

First of all, I want to say that I avoided reading this book for a very long time, but I am so addicted to Pride and Prejudice - in every single way I can get it - that I finally relented and purchased this book.

It lay on the coffee table for at least a week before I took it up in earnest. My husband was shocked when he saw the cover because zombies and the like are not my thing at all - and, just for the record, neither are vampires....more about that later. *ahem*

First of all, I found myself laughing at this book. It was also, very obviously, written by a guy. It has snippets from the Guy Manuel all over it. Honestly, you would think that would ruin if for a girl, but it didn't. It was a fun read....gross, but fun.....and rather hilarious in parts. The notion of Elizabeth Bennet being a trained ninja is ridiclous, but SO funny at the same time. Elizabeth is also no someone to mess with in this book. She would just as soon kill you as look at you at times. Upon meeting Mr. Darcy, she wants to slit his throat and do other horrible and shocking things....which could be interpreted for just what they are on the surface - or as sexual double entendre. It's up to the reader to decide. Very clever in that regard.

The purist Janeites are not going to like this book one iota - so if you aren't prepared to read with an open mind, take a pass. Most of the text is Miss Austen's original writing, but the 'subplot' of unmentionables wandering the countryside is just the tip of the iceberg of a myriad things that purists will hate about this rendition of a most beloved novel.

Plus, there are illustrations! The book is totally worth buying for the handful of illustrations in it alone! Basically, the following synopsis from Amazon says it all:

From Amazon:

It’s difficult to tell if critics’ reactions to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies should be characterized as praise or astonishment. Some reviewers treated the book as a delightful gimmick. Others found that, beneath the surface, the book actually constituted an interesting way of looking at Austen’s novel. Zombies answer certain puzzling questions: Why were those troops stationed near Hertfordshire? Why did Charlotte Lucas actually marry Mr. Collins? (She had recently been bitten by zombies and wanted a husband who could be counted on to behead her—of course!) But critics also pointed out that this parody shows that Austen’s novel has remained so powerful over time that even the undead can’t spoil it.

Copyright 2009 Bookmarks Publishing LLC

Jen's rating: 7 out of 10 stars. I have been looking for a new job and it is proving to be unsuccessful and a bit frustrating.

I am not going to be negative about this, I will continue to search, and soon something will come up and I will be joyful and thankful for it.

This month, I am on a Jane Austen kick.

I have been reading a lot of sequels and re-writes of her novels. I think many of them are wonderful and interesting to read.

I saw Lost In Austen this past week or so and have become quite taken with the show.

It is about a young woman who's life isn't what she wants it to be and so she looses herself in Pride And Prejudice...

She finds Elizabeth Bennet in her bathroom and from there, the young woman, Amanda Price, ends up in Austen's book herself.

What ensues from that point on is a delightful misadventure and an accidental re-write of the original novel...

Oh, and a very delicious version of Mr. Darcy in Elliot Cowan...and this from a Colin Firth's Version of Mr. Darcy fan too!!! Oh, and for those who WANT to make a connection to the second Mr. Darcy favorite, Matthew MacFadyen, he starred in a movie with him called "Little Dorrit.

Here is the Amazon.com description:

"Amanda Price is sick of the modern world. She yearns for the romance and elegance found in the books by her favorite author, Jane Austen. But she's about to get a rude awakening as one fateful evening, she is propelled into the scheming 19th century world of Pride and Prejudice while that book's Elizabeth Bennet is hurled into hers. As the book's familiar plot unfolds, Amanda triggers new romantic twists and turns within the Bennet family circle as she clumsily tries to help the sisters nab husbands and even captivates the tantalizing Mr. Darcy herself. But what about Elizabeth...and what will become of one of the world's greatest love stories?"
~Amazon.com

AustenLand

Jane Hayes is a seemingly normal young New Yorker, but she has a secret. Her obsession with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, is ruining her love life: no real man can compare. But when a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-crazed women, Jane’s fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become realer than she ever could have imagined.

Decked out in empire-waist gowns, Jane struggles to master Regency etiquette and flirts with gardeners and gentlemen—or maybe even, she suspects, with the actors who are playing them. It’s all a game, Jane knows. And yet the longer she stays, the more her insecurities seem to fall away, and the more she wonders: Is she about to kick the Austen obsession for good, or could all her dreams actually culminate in a Mr. Darcy of her own?

http://www.squeetus.com/stage/books_austen.html

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I loved this novel!! Eleanor discovers her hotel room is haunted by sisters Mina and Deirdre Cracklebury, and she agrees to a deal: she will save their brother, Teddy, from a deadly duel by keeping the wicked Lord Shermont from seducing one of the sisters, in trade for meeting Jane Austen. Eleanor wakes up in 1814, meets smarmy Teddy and is instantly attracted to Lord Shermont, who is not all he seems. Soon she's forced into a terrible choice: Hot sex or the real Jane Austen? True Janeites will find scant evidence of Austen's acerbic wit in either character or tone, but the sprightly humor, handsome hero and twisty ending will please most Regency romance fans. All rights reserved.
I saw this book one day, a few weeks ago, while taking my kids to the bookstore on vacation. We were in a bit of a hurry and so I didn't have time to stop and check this book out - I couldn't even really remember the title. As it happens, I just happened to catch the cover of this book out of the corner of my eye at another book store on another out of town trip. Needless to say, this time I made it a point to purchase - and I am not a bit sorry I did.
I rarely say this, but this is one of the very few Jane Austen-esque books that I would like to see adapted for the big screen. Ms. Brown does a fantastic job mixing humor and playful banter into her heroine's experience and the delicious Lord Shermont is the very definition of swoon-worthy. An excellent character who is very Darcy-like without actually *being* Darcy. I loved that!
This was a lovely, light read and a fun little trip into the Regency world. It wasn't bogged down by a bunch of period details - it actually does an excellent job of embracing the fact that Eleanor is not a period person without it making it seem like she is an alien. The subtleties are there, but don't overtake the story,l which I found refreshing. For once, I wasn't beaten over the head with the minute details of Regency life. A welcome change to be sure!
Jane Austen herself makes an appearance in this book and after several books where Miss Austen makes an appearance, this rendition of her is by far the best. Ms. Brown has done a wonderful job of writing Miss Austen's presence in this book and I applaud her for it. Well done Ms. Brown!
Jen's rating: 8.5 out of 10 stars.....a fun Regency romp with a few modern extras..and a couple of pretty darn good love scenes!
A Little Bit Psychic
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FCuq_ro90Es/SlVwWZagkPI/AAAAAAAABmY/bv1Q1nS0ci4/s400/41KCL8byQRL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA240_SH20_OU01_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356310861908578546" />
From Amazon: If Jane Austen lived in the 21st Century, who knows how Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet would overcome their false impressions, mistaken pride and unfounded prejudices. Here is a possible answer. -- Take a humorous journey with post-graduate student Elizabeth Bennet as she travels to London to study for her PhD. Will her strange dreams of princesses and knights hold her back or will being just "A Little Bit Psychic" aid her in discovering that William Darcy is the love of her life?"
I started reading Pride and Prejudice sequels a few years ago. To be honest, most of them suck and aren't worth reading...and I have to say that this one is no exception.
Now, by the above description, you would think that this book would be an okay story. Modern Pride and Prejudice retellings are not always my favorite but I love these characters so much that I always at least give them a try. Going by the above description, I was expecting a novel and what I actually got was a far cry from that.
First of all, this book is short - seriously short. Only 110 pages to re-tell the whole of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth's love story? There is honestly not enough of this book for things like plot development, character development or intricacies that draw you into a story or make you attached to characters.
To be brutally honest, this book reads like a fan fiction written by a young woman who has never been in a real relationship. There isn't much of a relationship between the 'Lizzy' and the 'Darcy' characters in this book - and the backstory of William being attracted to Lizzy when she was 12 and he was 17 is just kind of gross. Sorry, but it is borderline inappropriate and just plain yucky - not to mention dumb.
There is no plot in this book so don't bother looking for it. It simply doesn't exist. There is a totally silly misunderstanding where the main character, Lizzy, thinks that William is involved with Caroline when in fact she is married to William's cousin Richard- which is simple and frankly, preposterous. Honestly, it's like the author of this book didn't have anyone else proof read this book and if she did, she chose not to accept any advice about any of the content - right down to a couple of typos. Seriously put out that I spent $8 on this. I have honestly read informational pamphlets that were more entertaining that this 'book'.
Jen's rating: 2 of 10 stars...Really, really awful. I wanted to like it - I really did - but the best thing about this book is the cover. The cover rocks!
Mr. And Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy~Two Shall Become One by Sharon Lathan...Review Part 2
Alright dear friends, please forgive me for being so late in my review of Sharon's novel....I wanted to wait until the excitement of the interviews, the book contest and Jen's review had time to sink in.
I must begin by saying a few things concerning my own personal experiences with Jane Austen pre-quels and sequels...and my background with Jane Austen.
I am a huge fan of Jane Austen, EMMA being my absolute favorite...Pride And Prejudice being a close second.
Being a fan of the original, I have always been reluctant to attempt to read a pre-quel or sequel to any of her books...that being said, I attempted to read Linda Berdoll's trilogy and only got through the first couple of chapters because it was too....well, I don't know, but it almost ruined P&P for me. Darcy and Elizabeth weren't that kind of people in my heart and mind.
So, when Jen told us of Sharon's book being published by Sourcebooks, I rushed over to her page and read up on Sharon and the Darcy Saga, finding the lady herself wonderful, and the site very pleasing....so I rushed to my local Target store on the day it came out and purchased my copy of MR. AND MRS. FITZWILLIAM DARCY~TWO SHALL BECOME ONE (oh, and since a new version of Pride And Prejudice was out right next to her novel, I picked it up...since my own copy has somehow flown the coop in my many moves, I wanted a reference...lol).
MR. AND MRS. FITZWILLIAM DARCY~TWO SHALL BECOME ONE sequel to PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. It is the continuation of the relationship of new lovers...the everyday life of a married couple...no drama, the only craziness is Mrs. Bennett, and that is normal for Elizabeth, and Mr. Darcy has come to discover this for himself.
We begin with the Darcy's newly married and contemplating their courtship and looking forward to their wedding night, there's a bit of a build up, but it is a sweet moment in my heart.
As I read of Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth's courtship, Sharon shocked me in many ways....over things that I would have never thought of in any lifetime...Darcy's purity was the first, and quite honestly, refreshing and adorable in my heart. It's one of the few remaining questions I would love to ask Sharon-why Mr. Darcy, a man of such command, is a virgin...but that is neither here nor there, it's a sweet thought.
The wedding night was adorable as well....no heaving busoms or throbbing whatevers...just two people in love sharing a special moment-the first.
The relationship throughout the novel is wonderful. It is the type of relationship all single grown women dream about...to have a man love you unconditionally and know that good times and bad times will come, but you will be together. This is the "Happily Ever After...add Mrs. Bennett and Life"...sorry Sharon, she is one of my favorite side characters, and she makes me laugh everytime!!
What made me giggle is how easily Sharon created a likeable Mr. Darcy. He is aproachable, and comes out of his shell quite easily with Elizabeth.
The easy banter between Lizzy and Darcy in this novel is touching and fun. You can see the two of them becoming closer every day.
I loved the novel, and had a hard time putting it down, and am now groaning in impatience because I have to wait until later in the year for the next installment of the life of the Darcys and their families and friends.
I enjoyed the first installment of the life at Pemberly, and I am looking forward to LOVING MR. DARCY~JOURNEYS BEYOND PEMBERLY coming out September 1, 2009 and THE DARCYS AT YEAR'S END to be released in January 2010.
I highly recommend MR. AND MRS. FITZWILLIAM DARCY~TWO SHALL BECOME ONE to any Jane Austen fan...for those of us who like the sweet side of the relationship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth, this is a perfect continuation.
Thank you Sharon for penning such an awesome book, and for making my first real foray into P&P sequels very enjoyable!
Happy reading everyone,
Karol
20 Questions with Sharon Lathan - Part 2
I’m back again for the remaining 10 questions. A multitude of additional thanks to the Awaiting Diana gals and readers who have so marvelously supported me. Hopefully my romantic, historical novel will not disappoint but will only bring you the joy and warmth that I intended.
Part 1 was posted on March 4 and can be read by clicking HERE - PART 1. OK, now for Part 2 of my interview with Jen……
11. Describe the Pride and Prejudice 'fandom' in three words.
Zealous. Diverse. Widespread.
12. Would you give any consideration to selling the movie rights to any of your novels?
Sure! I can’t imagine that ever happening, but I would be a fool to not embrace the possibility. I would want to be involved to some degree; make sure my creation wasn’t messed up. And, of course, to meet Matthew Macfadyen in the flesh – he has to be Mr. Darcy after all. But beyond that, I haven’t even thought of it!
13. You have created several characters in your sequel. Which one is your favorite?
My absolute favorite does not appear until the next book, so be sure to ask me this question then! As for Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy, that is a little tougher since most of the characters are from the source novel, seen briefly, or servants. Hmmm… I am very proud of how I enhanced the character of Colonel Fitzwilliam. He is very minor in Austen’s book. I expanded him, gave him a background, and made him fun. I really love him!
In this novel I created several friends of Darcy whose wives become friends to Lizzy. I love Amelia Lathrop, the sassy Scottish lass that visits over Christmas. And I love Harriet Vernor. I love her dry wit and irreverence that instantly appeals to Lizzy. And, to my own surprise as the saga unfolded, I really grew to love Samuel and Marguerite, the personal servants to Mr. and Mrs. Darcy. They took over to a large degree, exerting themselves until I finally gave them the spotlight more. *hints of what is to come* Some of my characters can be SO pushy!
14. Describe Sharon Lathan in three words.
Compassionate. Saved. Tenacious.
15. What is the one book you have read that made the biggest impact on you?
There is only one book that has completely impacted my life, and that is the Bible. The Words written therein literally changed who I am and since the Bible is alive, it never grows dull!
The next closest would be the novels of JRR Tolkien. I have had an over 30 year affair with Middle Earth, culminating in several years of exalting joy when the movies came out.
16. How much of your time is spent in research?
An enormous amount. I really could not say exactly, but I do know that I have gotten lost, frequently, for hours as I read through page after page of text. The number of websites I have bookmarked is phenomenal. I never take one slip of information, but always cross-check, dozens of times. Luckily I adore history and am a stickler for the facts, so it is never a burden. Additionally, my passion for understanding the Era and digging exhaustively has lead to me discovering a slew of historical tidbits that have ended up being whole sections or chapters! For instance, as I researched Christmas customs of the day I read about masquerade balls being a very popular way to celebrate Twelfth Night. From that came dancing the waltz, a way to introduce the citizens of Derbyshire, and the ominous encounter with the Marquis of Orman. Are you intrigued?
17. What do you like to do when you are not at work or writing? Any hobbies?
I think I have forgotten what a hobby is! With literally two full-time jobs, I sometimes feel like my head is going to explode! Of course, that is all the more reason why down-time is necessary, even when one loves their jobs as much as I do.
I am a serious TV junkie and would probably curl up and die without my DVR. Reading is still a passion and now that I am discovering the world of romance novels, it is even more exciting. Being with my family and going on dates with my darling husband is a necessary part of my life. We are all active in our church, something that balances me and keeps me focused.
18. Outside of your family, who is your biggest support?
My world-wide network of fans. Collectively and individually they have kept me going when the times got rough. The positive feedback, kind words, stories of how my novels have touched their hearts, friendship, encouragement, and cold-hard cash in buying my books has been vital in keeping me focused. I know, without a doubt, that there are several times I would have given up if not for the wealth of letters and forum comments to reinforce the necessity of what I am writing.
19. Will you ever give up nursing to write on a full time basis?
It is difficult for me to ever imagine it. For one, I make a very good living as an RN with 25 years experience! I would need to sell a load of books to surpass my current income. Even if that happened (And don’t get me wrong, I hope it does!) I love my profession too much to give it up entirely. I can see cutting back on my hours to be freer to write more! That would be wonderful.
20. Through out the whole writing process, which began for you in the fan-fic world, what is the greatest lesson you have learned?
To be true to my vision, to my desire, and to my gift. Criticism comes from all directions, and opinions will be offered freely and loudly. The simple truth is that I will never make everyone happy, so I can ultimately only write what I believe in. What is in my heart is all that truly matters.
Have I covered everything? I have read almost all of them in existence - not all, but almost all. It is very true that I have said in the past that most Pride and Prejudice sequels are absolute rubbish and yet, I read every single one I can get my hands on. I can't seem to stop - and truthfully, it is a totally harmless guilty pleasure - fat free, carb free, alcohol and cholesterol free.....so why not?
What is the draw for me? Purely and plainly, it is the character of Darcy. I love him. He is a thinking girl's "Knight in Riding Boots" and Sharon's rendering of my favorite literary man is nothing short of nirvana for the Darcy lover. Now, I know there are those out there who will disagree - and you can disagree all you want. I want a Darcy who doesn't have a dark past, who doesn't have any illegitimate half siblings, who doesn't time travel..... you get my message here. We each have our own image of Darcy. Sharon delivers that to her reader - and then some. That is one of my favorite parts about that character. Miss Austen gave us just enough to go on - and we get to fill in the blanks.
When Sharon discovered the character of Darcy and filled in her own blanks, she made him into a very masculine, romantic and passionate Darcy. That is the driving force behind this book. Darcy is so wonderful and manly, you cannot help but to fall for him. He and Elizabeth set out in their newly married life to explore and discover one another - and while they are both very dedicated to their 'studies', the romantic and passionate love between the two keeps the reader mesmerized. It is a lovely rendering of a loving and passionate marriage.
This is not Pride and Prejudice rehashed and regurgitated with a few details changed. This book is truly the continuing story of the lives of Fitzwilliam Darcy and his new bride Elizabeth. There are quite a number of sensual scenes in this book - which is very true to life for the stage of marriage that Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth are in. They have just discovered the pleasures of the flesh as it were. If you want a story that will bring you intimately into the lives of the Darcys after they begin their married life together, this is the book for you.
The continuing story of the lives of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam is lovingly told by Ms. Lathan with great care and attention to detail. The research and historical context is both romantic and enlightening for the reader. You come away with a real sense of life in the late 19th century and a real sense of the lives of these two people who are deeply in love with one another.
In the end, you are uplifted by a story about love that is not riddled with odd plot points and dark themes. This is, quite simply, a story about love an excellent example of marriage and happily ever after. A wonderful read that is taylor made for the romantic at heart.
20 Questions with Sharon Lathan
I am so thrilled to be here and talk about my debut novel! Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy ~ Two Shall Become One is now available everywhere. This sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the first in my three book (with more to come after that) Darcy Saga series being published by Sourcebooks. Details can be read at my website: The Darcy Saga
My publishing journey has been amazing. Being able to see and hold a book in my hand that was written lovingly by me is a joy that defies description. That alone would be enough to fill my heart with gladness, but I now have the additional pleasure of chatting about it to prospective fans all over the web! Jen, Karollyn, and Marja have graciously allowed me to publicize on Awaiting Diana, going even further by interviewing me. Jen came up with some fabulous questions that I had a marvelous time answering. I hope you all enjoy the experience of reading the interview as I did in partaking.
The 20 Questions will be split up into two installments, the second half posting on March 10. I encourage you to comment and ask questions! I promise to respond and join in the fun. But also I am planning to give away a signed copy of my novel! Everyone who comments will be entered. More on that later. For now, let’s begin…..
1. Were you a Jane Austen fan before you saw Pride and Prejudice in 2005?
Not overly, no. I had never read her novels, but I had seen some of the movie adaptations. I knew about Jane Austen from college classes, loved the romantic historical aspects of her stories, but it would be a lie to say I was a particular fan.
However, I have to stress that just because I came to her fandom recently, does not mean I am not a huge fan now. I shall even be so bold as to assert that I have immersed myself in more Jane Austen and Regency these past 3 years then the average reader does in a lifetime.
2. Some movies just inspire people and you and I have chatted about the fact that you are an avid movie and television fan. What was it about that particular movie that inspired you to write your first P&P fanfic?
I honestly do think that much of it boils down to timing – and the existence of fan fiction. The stories that would previously swirl through my brain and weave in my dreams never found an outlet, and I did not have the time to take it the next step. Plus, it never occurred to me to do so! But now I am in a place in my life - with my kids being older and only working part-time - that allows me to plunge into what I originally saw as a fun hobby. The existence of JAFF gave me the idea, the incentive, the arena, and the audience.
However, it certainly was the passionate love story of Lizzy and Darcy that captured me! I am an avowed cinephile and I know a masterful movie when I see one. Joe Wright’s vision is astounding. He is incredibly gifted as a director and it shows in Pride & Prejudice. People who can’t see past the fact that it leaves novel parts out to appreciate the brilliance are sadly missing out, IMHO. There is no way that a half-hearted, light romantic comedy would have captured me the way this movie did.
I mean, you don’t see me writing Star Wars or Buffy fan-fic, and I knew that existed! I am more of a romantic at heart then I realized. I simply could not let go of these characters. They burrowed into my heart and I had to tell their tale. It was a drive and obsession that I was unable to ignore.
3. Your story is very much centered on the relationship between Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam. There are no bombshell plot twists, time travel, dark pasts, illegitimate children, etc. Some readers have been quite critical of that and have gone so far as to say that there is no plot in your book. What is your reaction to that criticism?
From a certain point of view I agree with them!
But first, let’s remember that the dictionary definition of ‘plot’ is: Storyline; the theme, plan, and sequence of events in a literary work. My tale isn’t typical, I know that. I would agree that most novels, of any genre, do have a single conflict/resolution type plot. But the problem I have with this critical attitude is that not ALL books follow the standard format. Many very successful literary geniuses on down through time have written books and series that have a saga type theme. Such as Laura Ingalls Wilder, Louisa May Alcott, John Jakes, Stephen King, Diana Gabaldon, and even Stephenie Meyer! Sci-fi/fantasy is replete with serial novels. How I approach my life for the Darcys isn’t a bizarre, untenable phenomenon.
Furthermore, I respond by saying that I have made my thematic plot/essence very clear. Anyone who buys my novel expecting major angst or a dastardly Mr. Darcy just isn’t paying attention! Every writer down through time has brought his or her unique perspective and voice to what they create. Rules are broken over and over, if they even truly exist at all, and thank God for that or all novels would be precisely the same! Why not a story that is mostly angst-free and sweet? Why shouldn’t a reader be able to curl up with an engaging, romantic tale that will bring them joy without pain? Aren’t these more valid questions?
4. In your opinion, what is it about Mr. Darcy that makes women want him so much?
I could write an entire thesis on this. Good thing you stressed ‘my opinion’ because if there is one incontrovertible fact I have learned it is that no one agrees on who Mr. Darcy is! Oh, everyone thinks they got him wired and are dogmatic in their interpretation being the only one Austen would agree with. But line up 100 women and I can guarantee you they will all say something different.
I didn’t approach my story with a life-long crush on the Mr. Darcy mystique. Some think that fact means I shouldn’t touch him at all, but I disagree. I had no pre-conceived ideas of The Man. I judged my interpretation on first impressions enhanced by my own reading of the novel, without the endless debates and philosophical dissections clouding my judgment. In the end I took my heart’s impressions, using the raw material so to speak, and enhanced Mr. Darcy to be the man I wanted him to be.
For me it wasn’t the idea of Lizzy’s persuasion somehow changing this arrogant jerk into Mr. Wonderful. Not at all! I saw Darcy, as portrayed in the movie and understood further in my own reading, as fairly fantastic already, but misconstrued. Why else would our heroine realize she loved him? I am personally much more intrigued by a man who is independent and balanced all on his own without needing me to fix him. My knowledge of history involving the landed gentry of that day coupled with the hints we have of Mr. Darcy as Master of Pemberley, lead to the conclusion that he was a strong, capable, respected, decent man. Add to that the reticent intensity, stunning handsomeness, raging virility, and massive pocketbook, and you pretty much have a perfect package!
5. What does your husband think of his wife, The Novelist?
Ha! My husband is so proud and enthusiastic that it is driving us all crazy! He says that he is not surprised, considering how much of an avid reader I have always been. I am blessed to be married to a man who knows each of my faults intimately, yet also thinks me exceptional. His constant support and undying love is continual fuel for my romantic flame.
6. Do you have a favorite scene in Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy?
Ooh, that is tough. I am still very proud of the entire wedding night. The blend of newness and familiarity, shyness and communication, humor and seriousness, all culminating in blissful bonding is written precisely as I imagined it. Another favorite is when Lizzy sneaks to Darcy’s office, reading his journals and examining his memorabilia. For me this was a pivotal moment when we see the deeper soul of Darcy. And then I really love the duel. My first action scene! I poured over my fantasy books and several movies to get a fresh feel for the moves, plus reading endless articles on historical duels, and learning about fencing! I did not take the decision to write a duel lightly, I assure you. It was wonderful fun and I think it turned out a nail-biter.
7. You are very generous with your fans. Have any of the conversations/comments you have had with any of them inspired anything in your books?
Not directly, as far as I can recall. But without a doubt the overwhelming praise and approval for the story’s tone, level of sensuality, characterization, and everything else has kept the inspiration flowing. My fans have been very generous to me, so it is only proper to return the favor. I am definitely the winner in the equation.
8. Do you think anything else could inspire you as much as Joe Wright's version of Pride and Prejudice?
Oh sure. The truth is that I have frequently had dreams inspired by movies or books or my own ideas; visions swirling through my mind. But as I said, this one hit me just right; had all the perfect elements. To be honest though, I don’t think I want to be inspired so directly again. If I ever leave the Darcys behind, or take a hiatus, it will be with my fresh ideas.
9. Have you ever read any other Pride and Prejudice sequel or fill in? What did you like about it? Dislike about it?
I have never read any of the previously published sequels, no. In my early search for a sequel to fit the vision in my head I read thousands of stories on the various JAFF sites. There were many short stories that offered tantalizing glimpses or came close, but either they were too brief or missing the highly romantic tone I craved. The one that was closest to my desire for the Darcys is a novella titled “Summer at Pemberley” written by Lucy, and can still be read at Austen Interlude. It is beautiful. A happy Lizzy and Darcy who are deeply in love. Exactly what I wanted, but reading it just made me hunger for more.
10. What is the one bit of advice you would give to an aspiring writer?
Be persistent and be patient! This is not an easy business to crack into, and once you do it is confusing and requires hard work. Secondly, believe in yourself and your creation. No matter who you are or how fabulous your story, there will be criticism and rejection. You can’t please everyone and there are many folks who delight in speaking their minds, often for the express purpose of wounding. A tough skin is required! But do not give up because seeing your work on a shelf is the best feeling in the world.
This ends Part 1. Thanks Jen for making me think! Seriously, it was so fun. Now, everyone comment, even if it is just to say hi. Feel free to ask questions and I will answer as soon as I can. Remember, a signed novel is at stake. Tune in on the 10th for the remainder where I disclose the location of the Bat Cave….just kidding!
Stepping up to the mic!
Hello visitors of Awaiting Diana and readers of novels! I figured it was way past time for me to step forward and greet you all. I am Sharon Lathan, the so-far silent partner/member of this wonderful website. Jen, Karol Lynn, and Marja have been gracious, welcoming, and supportive for ages now. Too much so if you ask me! I feel quite guilty at how lovely they have been while I have been so tangled up in my own affairs, sadly unable to devote time to this terrific website. They have asked – nay, begged – me to join in as a sanctioned co-author of the blog. I am honored and humbled by their generosity and kindness.
In a moment I will place the focus on my novels – Trust me, I have no problem with shameless self-promotion! – But first I have to take a minute to tell a short story. I have spoken and written many times about the incredible, life-long friendships I have made via my endeavors. Jen introduced herself to me close to 3 years ago, discovering my then-online fan fiction chapters and falling in love. Gradually we began chatting on a personal basis, our friendship cementing and leading to a meet up while both of us happened to be at Disneyland 2 summers ago. Jen’s support and positive commentary on her Life on the Mountain blog and at Awaiting Diana has been immeasurable, and I truly cannot take the time to elaborate all the ways she has touched my life or the blog will start smoking from data overload! I love ya baby!
Now, I never expected Jen to open up Awaiting Diana to me, but I suppose in one respect, given our long relationship and her ample heart, it does not have come as a huge shocker that she would do just that. What is the shocker is that Karol and Marja have happily jumped on board without knowing me or reading any of my books! I know that is not a testimony to me, but to the spirits these women possess. The implicit trust in Jen to not allow anything that would harm the blog, and the pure desire to assist authors and promote books is what drives them. Thank you Karol and Marja for embracing me as a friend and sister.
OK! Enough of the mushiness. Although, if that bothered you then you probably would not be interested in my story as it is mushiness galore! I have written a true happily-ever-after tale of marital bliss between Jane Austen’s famed literary couple, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. My debut novel is Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy ~ Two Shall Become One and, as probably surmised, is a sequel to "Pride & Prejudice." My beautifully printed and gorgeously covered bound paperback is currently burning up the shelves at Target, and will be officially released everywhere by March 1. I shan’t say too much more at this juncture since Jen has invited me to interview with her later this month. But, if curious, pop over to my own website – The Darcy Saga – where everything can be read about my novel series in detail.
Thanks again to the three exceptional ladies who work so diligently to review books and encourage reading.
At Christmas, I always try and choose a Christmas themed 'quick read' book and this year I chose A Wallflower Christmas by Lisa Kleypas. Now, I admit to choosing this book almost totally at random whilst perusing the title selections at Target. Frankly, the only reason I even picked this title up was because it is a Regency-era story and what could be better than Regency and Christmas, right?
So, into my cart it went and I actually did find time to read it over the Christmas holiday. It was a fast and fun read, full of juicy and romantic interaction - though I will have to say it was a little light on the Regency Era manner and speech. Actually, that is fine with me because it was such an enjoyable story that I hardly noticed until I had read the entire book.
To my utter joy and delight, I discovered that there are more books written about the characters in this particular story and guess who's birthday just happens to be three weeks away?! Jen is a lucky girl at times - LOL
Jen's rating: 8 of 10 stars......very enjoyable and juicy read. Make sure your significant other is at hand and enjoy!
The description from Amazon:
The Wallflowers are four young ladies in London who banded together in their wild and wickedly wonderful searches for true love. Now happily married, they join together once again to help one of the world’s most notorious rogues realize that happiness might be right under the mistletoe.…
It’s Christmastime in London and Rafe Bowman has arrived from America for his arranged meeting with Natalie Blandford, the very proper and beautiful daughter of Lady and Lord Blandford. His chiseled good looks and imposing physique are sure to impress the lady in waiting and, if it weren’t for his shocking American ways and wild reputation, her hand would already be guaranteed. Before the courtship can begin, Rafe realizes he must learn the rules of London society. But when four former Wallflowers try their hand at matchmaking, no one knows what will happen. And winning a bride turns out to be more complicated than Rafe Bowman anticipated, especially for a man accustomed to getting anything he wants. However, Christmas works in the most unexpected ways, changing a cynic to a romantic and inspiring passion in the most timid of hearts.
A Wallflower Christmas takes a trip to Victorian London, under the mistletoe, and on a journey of the heart. With her trademark charm, sensuality, and unforgettable characters, there’s no one like Lisa Kleypas to make you believe in the magic of Christmas.
